• An orchid bridal bouquet was originally known as the wedding bouquet for the noble and the wealthy.  This is because it was thought that orchids themselves could only be grown in hot and humid climates at a very costly expense.   Modern cultivation and distribution of the orchid dates back to the 1700’s, where most of the myths and legends surrounding this beautifully mysterious looking flower were started.  Nowadays, many varieties of orchids are grown and distributed world-wide, and orchid bridal bouquets are quite a bit more plentiful and affordable.

An orchid bridal bouquet is ideal for a wedding with a classic theme.  What could be more exquisite than Phalaenopsis or Cymbidium orchids with stephanotis and coordinated foliage to compliment a white bridal gown?  The Cymbidium orchids have large flower heads and come in white, pale yellow, pink, and green varieties.  This is a heartier orchid, so it will stand up better than other orchids.  This is especially important if you have a wired bouquet and have a long day ahead of you.  However, there is nothing that can help if your bouquet is wilting while pictures are still being taken, so make sure that the flowers are well-conditioned before the ceremony.

Since growing orchids has become a popular hobby, many people decide to use their own orchids for their wedding.  In order to turn your own orchids into an orchid bridal bouquet, you will need three to four orchids, whatever foliage you would like to use, florist’s wire, and any ribbons you would like to attach for decoration.  Start by cutting the orchid stems and standing them in water overnight so that the stems absorb as much water as possible.  Before the ceremony, wire each stem to increase its length and give it more stability.  Wrap the stems in floral tape to hide the wire and then wire the whole bouquet together.  Finish off the orchid bridal bouquet with ribbon and keep it in refrigeration until it is time for use.  Refrigerated orchid bridal bouquets should last 2-3 days.

An orchid bridal bouquet can be ordered in white or also in beautiful lavenders, fuchsias, yellows, burgundies, oranges, and many hybrid colors.  This makes them flexible for many color schemes, but the ‘wow’ factor really comes from the distinctive markings on the petals.  An incredible array of patterns on these flowers, combined with the unusual shape of the petals, sepals, and lip of the orchid will get any guest’s attention.  If you carry an orchid bridal bouquet at your wedding, get ready for a lot of compliments.

Of course, if you carry an orchid bridal bouquet for your wedding, the tendency is to have them at you reception as well.  While a bridal orchid bouquet may be in your budget, hundreds of them may be too pricey.  Here is where a little creativity comes in to play.  For the tables, you can simply take orchid heads and float them in a flat vase of water to create beautiful centerpieces.  Centerpieces can also be planted orchids, which can double as raffled-off take home gifts for guests.  Gloriosa lilies or irises can also be substituted for white orchids in order to make your flower budget go further.
