• A lily bridal bouquet is elegant and artful, and white lilies symbolize chastity, virtue, and purity of heart.  There are many varieties of lilies that are commonly used for bridal bouquets, including Stargazer lilies, Alstromeria lilies, and Oriental lilies.   While calla lilies and lily of the valley are also traditional wedding flowers, they are lilies in name only and should not be confused with flowers from the lily family. Real lilies come in different colors and many have beautiful markings on the petals.  Some lilies, like the Oriental lilies, also have a delicate fragrance.

Stargazers are the most popular lily for a lily bridal bouquet.  They are part of the Oriental lily family and have a slight, but beautiful fragrance.  They generally have six large petals that are red in the center and white around the edges.  The petals are so large, in fact, that not many of these flowers are needed to make a bouquet.  The flowers also have patterns of red markings on the petals that truly make it a beautiful flower for a bouquet.  The stems are straight and stiff, so Stargazer lilies are easy to assemble and carry.  Since these flowers are larger in size they are generally paired with other flowers to make a lily bridal bouquet.   This includes dendrobiums, roses, anthurium, nerines, and accents of rosemary.  Foliage that goes well with Stargazer lilies includes cordyline leaves, xanadu leaves, and monstera leaves.

Alstromeria lilies or Peruvian lilies are also beautiful and delicate.  The Alstromeria lily bridal bouquet is symbolic of devotion.  The petals of Alstromeria lilies are often streaked with accents of darker colors.  These lilies were first discovered in South America, where they flourish naturally in the Andes.  They have been used for nuptials in Europe since the late 1700’s, so white Alstromeria lilies have a long history as a choice for brides on their wedding day.   Like the Oriental lilies, Alstromeria lilies look better with a selection of flowers when they are in a lily bridal bouquet.  Flowers that make a beautiful bouquet along with Alstromeria lilies are irises, roses, asters, and daisies.

A lily bridal bouquet is generally limited in color.  Lilies are commonly found in whites, pinks, oranges and yellows.  This makes them better for spring or summer weddings, unless the lily bridal bouquet is all white.  Most Oriental and Alstromeria lilies will have the markings that make them very distinctive.  There are pure pink and also white varieties, but they are harder to find.  These flowers may look delicate, but they are actually sturdy and last for a long time if conditioned well.   It is wise to check with a florist before using lilies in a bouquet, to check the scent and make sure that allergies are not a problem.  The cost of lilies can be higher than other flowers, but because they are usually mixed with other blooms and foliage, the price turns out to be affordable.

The lily bridal bouquet is eye catching and when mixed with other flowers, it is spectacular.  The reasonable cost, the availability, the beautiful scent, and the heartiness of the lily bridal bouquet make it a favorite with brides everywhere.
